Happy Christmas Eve Fools.

YOU KNOW WHAT I LIKE? No? Don't care? Well, I'm going to tell you anyway. 'Cause I'm eighteen, I do what I want. In my family, we have this thing where right before we go to bed, we get to open one present on Christmas Eve. It's usually the traditional; slippers or pajamas. (Never know which you're going to get though. ooOOooo) Well, I just opened mine about ten minutes ago. PAJAMA PANTS. Win. I like pajama pants. I wear whatever shirt I find, but I find pajama PANTS to be special-er. I like them. Especially the ones that have Snoopy and Woodstock all over them. I like Snoopy. And Woodstock. I love Charlie Brown. ...Oh. Yeah. That's what I got. Snoopy pajama pants. Right, well, it's almost Christmas. So.. Happy Christmas. (Because we say 'Happy' for every other holiday, even birthdays, so I feel it's appropriate.) The end. To all a good night.

Peace,
Bree

Let me make your world (and your day).

Every so often I find little well made indie videos that don't feature ugly people talking to each other. This is one of them.

Hey! Sorry we left you hangin'!

Not to turn this into one of those, "Sorry we haven't posted in forever because you hang on to our every word, BLARG!" but seriously... I'm sorry we haven't been posting regular updates. We've all been really busy trying to do a bunch of crap that our lives required us to do. Daniel had a string of finals that needed work, I had a big list of BS that ended in triumph that I'll discuss on the next show, and Bree... probably had to go to the hospital again or something.

But the thing is, that's all over! It's done! We're free! Free at last! Halle-frickin'-luja! So you can actually expect this to be updated a bit more (at least by me, I can't speak for my co-hosts since they be lazy) and I think that the good times are here again! New Things that I Like will be posted tomorrow!

Dead Like Me

Aight dudes, here's the skinny. Around 2003-2004 Showtime had an incredibly hilarious show about death. The protagonist was one of several "reapers" who went around and made sure people passed on properly into the next life. It's a little complicated, but all you've got to know is that it's terribly entertaining.

It was cancelled after two seasons but hold on! They made a movie that was released as a direct to DVD this year. You should totally check it out, and we shall concur on how great the series was on the next podcast!

Rain/Winter Songs

It's raining and it's cold. Here are some songs that give me that feeling.

Grizzly Bear - "Easier"

This song always reminds me of my audition on the east coast and coming down on that airplane, looking at the entire world covered in snow. I don't think I like Grizzly Bear's newer album as much as I liked this one. Maybe that's just because Barnes and Noble played the new one for three months straight.

Led Zeppelin - "The Rain Song"

How could this song not be on this list? What are you stupid? Geez...

Fever Ray - "Keep The Streets Empty For Me"

Reminds me of the ARCTIC THUNDRAH! Probably my favorite song on the album.

Hum - "Why I like The Robbins"

Nice bass groove, and grungy enough to remind me of the rain.

Kupek - "I-90 / How Many Miles To You?"

Nirvana - "Come As You Are"

Abso-friggin-luteley is this song on the list. DUH.

Loney Dear - "Like, half of their songs. Seriously."

This is "I Was Only Going Out". Kinda cute lil indie song.

Pelican - "Aurora Borealis"

Another band that could have half their songs on the list. Live version.

Mountain Goats - "1 John 4:16"

A great rain song, especially when you listen to the lyrics.

Radiohead - "Faust Arp"

Not much to say, it's a beautiful lil song.

Bomb The Music Industry! - "Get Warmer"

Whole different perspective on bein' cold, eh?

Spoon - Vittorio E.

Nice way to end the night, with your windows opaque from rain.

G'night

Hey Kids! Comics!

I've made my love for Scott Pilgrim no secret and at the risk of sounding like a gushing fanboy (which I totally am), I'ma show this piece that O'Malley planned to use for Volume 4 of the series, but ultimately decided against it for some unfathomable reason. Lisa Miller's bits in that book were part of the reason that Volume 4 is very near and dear to me. I can't wait for volume 6 next year or the movie.

Review the chaos.

Of my two co-hosts, I'm probably the only one who actually reads recreationally on a regular basis (hey, you wanna write professionally, you gotta surround yourself with lit, even when pictures and spider-man aren't involved). One of my good friends, Teagan, lent me her copy of World War Z by Max Brooks, and its one of the best books I've read in a while.

World War Z is not a conventional zombie tale; in fact, it's not that conventional of a novel at all. The story deals with the advent of a Zombie outbreak that takes the world by storm, but deals with it in an oral history narrative, with the tale being told in hundreds of short vignettes from fictional characters that experienced the war as it happened. Because of this, the reader doesn't just get a story that moves forward, we see what lifestyle changes and challenges all the world had to go through in this hardship. One man had to develop castles as a fortress, another was soldier that barely escaped the biggest zombie conflict alive, one was just a humble suburban family that had to witness his family being torn apart in front of his eyes. That's what's most striking: You will believe that a zombie outbreak did occur a few years ago thanks to how startlingly realistic this work feels.

I really enjoyed this book. It follows the mentality that I think all zombie stories should follow: Focus on why the zombie outbreak would affect us as people, not how scary this would be if it was happening. If you create an immersive enough tale, the scares will come on their own.

Major Spoilers shout out!

I feel terrible. I've been meaning to give these guys props on the show for two weeks now, and both times I have failed. Stephen, Matthew, Rodrigo, if any of you guys are reading this, know that me not giving you guys shout outs on the show does not reflect any lack of appreciation that I have for your site and everything you do, it only reflects on the short term memory that have.

You guys have recommended some great comics titles to me and really reinvigorated my love for comic books since I started I started listening. I've had a ton of fun promoting you guys for the last two years I've gone to Comic-con, and I'm glad you guys apparently think enough of me to call me your Number 1 Spoilerite (If you met me in person, I'm sure you'd think differently), and I PROMISE that you will totally be mentioned on the next show.

-Julian

I HATE EVERYTHING.

Just kidding. That'd be stupid. BUT, since, all nine of you, maybe ten, didn't get to hear my oh-so-sexy voice on the last show, I wanted to get a post up so you aren't deprived of my internet presence too much. You see, I work at the movies and that Twilight New Moon came out this past weekend, which means busy weekend for me and getting home at like 2 or 3 in the morning... Whoo.

I won't go into detail about the movie or the Twilight franchise, because one, I haven't seen the second one yet, and two, this is a show about things I like, so...

Right, so just wanted to get that out there. The sparkly vampires haven't gotten me. I'd also like to mention if anyone has any questions, whether they're relevant or random, what any of our favorite colors are, whatever... ASK THEM. Because I would personally love to answer them, on the next show. Or any show in the future. GRATSI.

Peace fools,
Bree

P.S. MY favorite color is green, if any of you were curious. Even if you weren't curious, it's still green.

Grumpy Old Man (with knives in his hands)

Wolverine. Dear God, Wolverine. Is there any character more over-saturated in comics today?Seriously, in recent years every single writer wanted to either write a Wolverine story or somehow shoehorn the guy into their book. But in 2008, one Wolvie book actually managed to rise above the rest of the crowd thanks to its action movie writing from Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's outstanding pencils. And the world has seen fit to call this Old West action ride: Old Man Logan.

First, some back story: This story takes in a dystopian future where the bad guys have finally succeeded in taking over the world and Wolverine has become a pacifist with a faltering healing factor , a loving family, and claws that he hasn't popped in 50 years.

The most basic way I can describe this story is Dark Knight Returns by way of Batman Hush; by that I mean you get the dystopian future setting, but you see it a way that makes it much more of an action and fast paced romp than a brooding social commentary.

Millar's writing definitely keeps this book moving at a speedy clip. The book is definitely predictable on most fronts, especially the conclusion, so most of the fun is in seeing the expected events take place. And when you do see them happen, McNiven's art will not disappoint; this is one of the most gorgeous Marvel books I've seen in a while. There are so many pages in here that you could enlarge and make a poster out of, that your eyes are likely to bleed with happiness.

Old Man Logan certainly succeeds on delivering some great tight-nit action in the spirit of modern day westerns. The story may not be the deepest in the world, but then again it doesn't need to be. If you don't like Wolverine going all crazy badass on his foes in the conclusion then, frankly, you don't like Wolverine.

The goal behind this, really

I was asked the other day what the point was with creating a podcast where three dorks sit around and talk about the things we like. Digging through the internet, I found someone that expressed what my goal is with creating this podcast/blog.

If you don't feel like reading it, at least take this much from it: "With so much space devoted to things people hate, isn't it nice to read about the things someone likes?"
Or in our case, hear about the things someone likes. And that's all I want out of this.

No more, no less.

Mindset Page 1 and 2.

I've been a comic book fan for as long as I can remember. When I was young, I used to write and draw my own comic books. They were by no means professional or "good," but they were always good fun. I haven't written out a full on script for a book for a while but I started to toy around with this idea and thought it could be make for a good story. Mindset: think of it as the Bourne series, meets Deadzone, but with super powers. Here's the script for page 1 and 2. Hope you think it has any worth. I may draw it myself, I may find a better artist, I dunno. I'll decide later.

Page 1: Mindset issue 1.

Panel 1:

Wide panel. All Black. Nothingness. This is just a black panel. Easy to draw right?

Panel 2:

Wide Panel. We should see this from a first person perspective. We see the top and bottom of the panel bordered in black. In between the black we should just see a bit of the hospital stuff in front of him. He’s blinking awake.

Panel 3:

Wide panel. Mirrors the first panel. We should see just a bit of black bordering the top and bottom now. The hospital setting in front of him is more clear.

Panel 4:

Wide Panel. Same as before. This time there is no black bordering. The hospital room is in full detail.

Panel 5:

Big Panel. This should take up the remainder of the page. Gregory Winston is drawn in full headshot glory. He has a bit of 5 o’clock shadow on him. He should be square jawed, appealing, with a dazed look on his eyes like he’s squinting. He needs a haircut. His head is still resting on the pillow or he can be propped up

Blurb:

This is Gregory Winston. Right now, at exactly 10:23 on July 19, 2009, he is awakening from a coma that he’s been in for the last two years.

Page 2: Mindset issue 1

Panel 1:

Tall Panel. We should see Greg’s full body, in his hospital gown. He’s attempting to step out of his bed. He should be holding onto his IV stand for support.

Panel 2: (Right of the tall panel)

Small panel. Close up on his face. He’s looking down at his body. He has his eyebrow raised. He should still look really groggy.

Blurb:

At 10:24, He thinks he’s noticed three .45 caliber bullet wounds that are recovering nicely.

Pane 3-5:

Each of these panels will show the consecutive body parts. It should be obvious from the scars that they were stitched up. In panel three we se a shot of the area just above his knee cap, then in panel four a shot of his arm, and in panel five a shot of the area right on his chest. The blurbs will coincide with these shots.

Here. Here. And Here.

Panel 6:

Just Word box. No pictures.

At 10:25, he realizes these wounds don’t worry him.

Panel 7:

Small Panel. Greg’s foot has slipped. Maybe both feet should be off the ground. Whatever. Just make it obvious that he slipped. All we should see in this panel is a slipping foot, and a bit of background, but only if necessary. Nothing else.

Panel 8:

Wide Panel. Should take up the rest of the row. We see a look of panic on his face as he’s falling. He should be truly scared. Have his hands up in a panicked motion. He’s helpless. Have his IV stand flying up as well.

Blurb:

What DOES worry Gregory Winston, as he looses his footing and prepares to crash to the floor of the hospital room at 10:27...

Panel 9:

This panel should take up the rest of the page. Sky shot. Greg is lying on the floor of the hospital. Nurses and doctors are rushing inside

Blurb:

Is that he can’t remember how he got here in the first place.

So? Interested?

Cage the Elephant

Okay, so I've heard some good things about these guys. Cage the Elephant. So I trusted an investment of ten bucks into buying their CD and listened to the album straight through. Cause that's kinda my rule for myself. I have to listen to the whole album like that, no interruptions. Otherwise I'll never finish the album because I'll keep replaying the songs I like and never get past the fourth track. ANYWAY, I don't think it was a waste of money. This is a pretty good debut record. I'm likin' the style they have. It's rock, but there's some hinted bluesy sounds. It's like alternative with a old school soul a little bit. But it feels really fresh at the same time. Just my take. In a short paragraph anyway. I could go in depth and type a bunch more but that would just be boring.

Right, so, this is Things I Like. I like this album. Give it a listen.

Peace fools,
-Bree

My opinion is better than yours because I'm on the Internet!

One of the things I like to do is voice my opinion, even when no one else wants me to. Which is most of the time... But since I'm part of this blog you have no choice but to keep reading! Unless you want to turn away now...

No? Still here? Okay, let's do this!

Materialism. It's frowned upon in society. If you love something enough that you wonder what your life would be without it, a lot of people find that conceited. I'm afraid I can't agree. Loving your material possessions isn't an inherent bad, it just makes you human. If you came home to find your house on fire and saw all of the things that you worked so hard to attain go up in smoke, chances are you would be devastated right? Anyone would be. And if not being materialistic means not taking pride in you personal purchased prizes (why yes that was alliteration!), then no one can claim to have this trait. After all I'm sure there are plenty of poor people that would like to have more possessions and a more comfortable life; does that make them materialistic? As long as you don't let materialism consume your way of life, you can't blame yourself for indulging yourself every once in a while.

SOAPBOX OVER!

Morpheus approved of this Halloween

So, Halloween. Somewhere around the age of twelve people stop deciding to go trick r' treating and instead go with one of two options: If you're a girl, you take up the opportunity to dress up as something slutty that guys won't admit to fantasizing about and then get offended when guys look at you. If you're a guy, you get to stare at the girls who dress up as something slutty and then get prepared to be slapped by said offended girl.

...I had a point here somewhere... Anyway, this halloween I went out to a party dressed up as Morpheus and talked up with a bunch of people and sang in Rock Band until my voice gave out. This was a all good fun for about an hour until our live band showed up. "Grieve for Tomorrow" played an awesome 45-minute metal set that got us all in a moshing mood. Good times all around a really awesome way to spend the end of the month

Pelican - Streaming

Pelican is a badass band. They make badass music with no vocals. On their new album, they're doin' it with friends. The whole thing is streaming on their MySpace, and all two of you that read this blog should totally check it out.

LCD Soundsystem's single received the inconvenience of internet theft that no musician ever wishes to go through a few days back. Frontman James Murphy took the event in stride, deciding that "Hey, if they have to get it off the internet, it may as well come from us, right?" Thus, LCD became only the latest band to offer free music on the internet, letting the first 20,000 visitors to their website receive the download "Bye, Bye, Bayou."

The track certainly evokes the sound that the group is known for, offering just as many off-beat lyrics as it does off-beats themselves. A droning hum builds in the background, Hi-hat tease your ears, and eerie lyrics contribute to the unsettling nature of the song. The atmosphere is noticeably more dark and unsettling than their prior works and proves that Murphy is looking to move the groups material forward, while keeping it hauntingly familiar at the same time. The track almost feels incomplete without a song immediately following it to keep that groove that one normally finds themselves in listening to LCD Soundsystem, but given that it is a preview, the fact that it makes me hungry for more is probably what they always wanted. So yeah. I liked it.

Sorry we haven't ever posted...

Hold it. Wait. Stop whatever you're doing. Something feels different about this blog doesn't it? It brings up certain feelings that you never experienced, right? Don't fight it- stay here a while; enjoy the feeling. Read the posts, see the pictures, enjoy the good times.

Take a minute (or thirty) to listen to the podcast-the sultry voices will no doubt enforce those questionable feelings and you'll realize that the most important time of your life is just beginning. And don't worry about that strange feeling you're having down below; it'll all make sense when you're older.
